From Networking to Knowing Yourself — And Why Authenticity is Attractive

Clint looks out at images that represent AI, authenticity, networking expos and human connection

Hi, I’m Clint, founder of C-Sure Consulting. In this week’s edition of C-Shorts, I’m reflecting on yesterday’s Midlands Business Network Expo and everything it reminded me about human connection, collaboration, and showing up as your authentic self...

🦚 Standing Proud

Yesterday was my first time standing on the other side of the table at an expo, and it was a really valuable experience. Over the last year, much of my time has been spent building C-Sure Consulting in the gaps between homeschooling and family life. Being out there in person today felt like a milestone moment for me. Huge thanks to Bec and Oliver from RS22, who were incredibly supportive.

Thanks to them, I had the chance to demo our Cyber Attack Simulation with visitors who were curious enough to give it a try. The feedback was brilliant, and there were some great suggestions for tweaks to make it even better. Most importantly, people seemed to enjoy the experience, which was great to see.

I spoke to a lot of different people throughout the day, in different roles, industries, and with their own approaches to business. But, once you get talking, it's clear that we all care about the same things: good health, time with family, and work that matters. It was refreshing to be reminded of that.

Having spent years in a corporate environment, I had become quite used to behaving differently depending on who I was speaking to and what level they were in the hierarchy. It became almost second nature. Leaving that world behind has been a freeing experience for me. I don’t need to put on a mask or adjust my personality anymore. I can simply be myself, and that has made conversations like today’s feel natural and meaningful rather than a performance. 🧠 AI vs Authenticity

I had some interesting conversations at the expo with people working with AI about how we balance technology with authenticity.

AI can do some incredible things. Helping businesses work smarter while leaving the human judgment, empathy, and creativity to us.

But if we lean too heavily on AI, we risk losing that human touch. Content becomes more polished but potentially less personal. I think the trick is probably in combining the two.

I would rather read about someone’s real experience, even if it’s a little rough around the edges, than something that feels generic or disconnected. I'm sure AI can help me work faster, but it will never replace my own thoughts or the sense of connection that comes from sharing them. Nevertheless, I somehow agreed to have a call next week with one of the AI experts I met yesterday, so maybe they will change my mind... AI is surely going to change the way we run supply chains; in fact, it's already happening. The question is how we can make the best use of it...

It can help us cut forecast errors, reduce lost sales, and make better use of resources. It can also automate the repetitive, time-consuming tasks that take people away from solving problems creatively.

Despite being very efficient in crunching data, I don’t see AI replacing planning-type roles. Instead, I think it could reshape their responsibilities, making planners more like decision-makers and less like data administrators. We will always need people to interpret the insights, to build trust with suppliers, and to make the tough calls when trade-offs have to be made.

So I think we need to focus our energy where it matters most, on the human connections that build strong relationships. Because at the end of the day, it’s partnerships, not processes, that remain the driving force behind successful business. Lately, I’ve been reminded how much easier and more enjoyable business can be when you work with people you know and trust. It cuts out friction, sparks better conversations, and often opens doors to new opportunities.

For me, it’s about showing up authentically and building relationships that last, because when you focus on trust and collaboration, everything else seems to fall into place.

☕ Final Thoughts

Despite being stood on an IT Security stand all day yesterday and demonstrating a cyber security simulation, I won't be writing about cyber security in my blog this week. After spending most of this week getting the simulation expo ready, I think I'm all cybered out! 🙃

What I do want to leave you with is this... Try and get out there and talk to people. Share ideas. Listen. Collaborate. Who knows where it might lead.... 🤝 Let’s Keep Connected What was the most valuable conversation you had this week?

Do you find face-to-face networking energising, or do you prefer to stay behind the screen?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please comment below or contact us directly. Until next time...
