Hi, I’m Clint, founder of C-Sure Consulting. In this week’s edition of C-Shorts, I’m reflecting on what great brands, bold ideas, and time away from the desk can teach us about building something meaningful...
👟 Sports Shoes, Sweat, and the Spirit of Success
While relaxing on the beach this week, I finally finished Phil Knight’s Shoe Dog. Anyone who knows me well knows that I have been fiercely loyal to the Nike brand for a long time. As a boy, I was quite jealous of anyone at school lucky enough to be wearing Nike trainers for PE, while I had to make do with whatever my parents could afford. I started asking for Nike trainers as birthday or Christmas presents, and by the time I was 16 and working evenings, weekends, and school holidays, it didn't take me long to save for a pair of box-fresh Nike Air Max BW. I can still remember handing over £80 of my hard-earned cash for those beautiful shoes, and I left the shop feeling like I was walking on air.
Just as those trainers gave me a sense of pride and identity, Knight and his team built a company that embodied theirs.
One point that stood out to me was that Nike was never just about making money. The company was built on grit, belief, and a refusal to let go of something deeply personal, even when going public would have made the founders extremely wealthy.
It reinforced my own belief that the best businesses are built on passion and purpose, not just profit.
💫 Mindsets, and a Map to Utopia
While stocking up on podcasts for the holiday, I found Mo Gawdat’s recent episode on The Diary of a CEO. He paints a vivid picture of a future filled with both disruption and possibility. In his view, AI won’t just replace jobs — it could one day replace governments, making decisions faster, fairer, and without human bias.
“Utopia comes when we no longer need to work to buy food or shelter.”
That simple line stayed with me. In Gawdat’s vision, AI-driven productivity could make resources so abundant that scarcity all but disappears. Universal Basic Income would cover everyone’s essential needs, and businesses — freed from the sole aim of maximising profit — could afford to give their products and services away for free.
It’s a radical idea, but it makes sense when you think about it. If the ‘why’ behind your business is about improving lives, not just growing margins, then creating and sharing value becomes the goal itself. The purpose is the profit.
His vision may sound impossible to some, but this idea of utopia certainly appeals to me.
And while this may sound like a distant dream, there are already glimpses of it today...
🧸 The Entertainer and Empowered Employees
Speaking of companies giving things away, I was inspired to read about The Entertainer, the UK toy store chain whose founder has handed ownership of the company to its 1,900 staff. No sale, no cashing out, just a genuine transfer of value to the people who helped build the brand. It is such a refreshing example of leadership that puts people first and creates a legacy that will carry the company’s spirit forward long after the founder has stepped away. Maybe the utopian future Gawdat describes is possible after all...
🔋 Recharging, Reflecting & Refocusing
C-Sure Consulting is almost a year old now, and over the past few days, I've been reflecting on what I have built so far. There's still a lot to do, improvements to make, and many more clients to reach and support. For me, it has always been about helping people, solving problems, and building something that makes a real difference where it’s needed. One day, I hope to hand it over to someone who will care for it just as much as I do.
That's why holidays like this are so important.
An opportunity to get away from the day-to-day, spend time with the people who matter most, and reconnect to the 'why' behind the business.
