Hi, I’m Clint, founder of C-Sure Consulting.
In this week’s edition of C-Shorts, I’m jumping back on the cyber security bandwagon! October is Cyber Awareness Month, and after recently completing our own Cyber Essentials submission, I’ve been thinking about what that process taught me about resilience...
🧰 Toolkits, Training, and Signposting for Support
Earlier this month, I finally signed off and submitted the C-Sure Consulting application for Cyber Essentials. There was a lot to go through, and some important changes we needed to make, but I came away feeling much more confident in how we protect our data and operate as a secure business partner. If you haven't heard of it before, Cyber Essentials is a government-backed scheme that helps organisations defend against the most common types of cyber attack. It takes you through the basics in a practical, no-nonsense way. You start noticing small things that make a big difference, like which devices need attention, how access is managed, and where your weak points are.
If you’re planning to take it on yourself, I’d recommend joining the Cyber Essentials LinkedIn Support Group. It’s a friendly community of people who’ve been through the same process and are happy to share advice. Cyber Essentials was the perfect fit for our business, but there's all sorts of support out there...
If you’re looking to find out more, your local Cyber Resilience Centre should be your first port of call. They offer funded support, guidance, training, and other practical steps to help small businesses strengthen their cyber resilience and prepare for certification.
You can find your nearest Cyber Resilience Centre here: Find Your Nearest CRC The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has launched a new Cyber Action Toolkit designed specifically for sole traders, micro-businesses, and smaller organisations.
It’s free, practical and genuinely useful. You answer a few questions, and it gives you a personalised plan of simple actions you can take to improve your digital defences. The idea is to start small and build confidence through three levels of protection: Foundation, Improver and Enhanced. And for larger businesses ready for more advanced support, I’d recommend speaking to our friends at RS22 Cyber Security.
They have certified experts in all areas of cyber security, and work with handpicked vendor partners to give you 24/7 support and access to the best technologies available in the industry.
⚠️ Awareness ➕ Action 🟰 Assurance
Cybersecurity Awareness Month has been running for over twenty years now, encouraging everyone to refresh their knowledge, share best practices, and stay alert to new risks.
It’s a reminder of how important it is to cover the basics in everyday life.
Learning how to spot a phishing email, keeping your devices updated, using strong passwords, and backing up your data are all simple steps that stop everyday risks from turning into something far more serious.
A few easy habits can make a big difference:
Pause before you click – impatience opens you up to phishing scams
Use multi-factor authentication whenever possible
Update software regularly – patches keep you protected
Back up data both locally and in the cloud
Question urgent requests – especially if they don't look quite right
Limit admin access – not everyone needs the keys to the castle
Cyber awareness isn’t just a workplace issue. These tips are useful everywhere.
💸 The Cost of Complacency
The importance of cyber resilience has never been clearer, especially with news of attacks now a common theme around the world.
Analysts have just confirmed that the cyber attack on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is now the most financially damaging cyber event ever recorded in the UK, costing an estimated £1.9 billion.
Production was completely stopped for five weeks across multiple sites, including Solihull, Halewood and Wolverhampton. Dealer systems went down, orders were cancelled, and more than 5,000 suppliers were affected.
The Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC), which tracks incidents like this, said the recovery process could take until January 2026.
It’s a stark reminder that in today’s connected supply chains, a single point of failure can ripple right through an ecosystem.
And while JLR operates on a global scale, the lesson applies to every business. Even a short disruption can have a lasting impact if the right safeguards aren’t in place... 🔗 Reflection, Readiness and Real Resilience We often talk about resilience in terms of inventory or logistics, but digital resilience is just as critical.
You can’t have Supply Chain Resilience without Cyber Resilience.
According to the ASCM, data is now one of the most valuable and most targeted assets in any organisation. Today's criminals are less interested in stealing boxes from a warehouse and more interested in breaking into your network, where there could be much more for them to gain.
That’s why basic cyber hygiene needs to become as routine as your daily planning checks. It’s part of good governance, risk management and long-term trust building.
Completing our Cyber Essentials application was a really valuable experience. We strengthened our systems and improved our awareness and knowledge in the process. It also reminded me how quickly the world changes, and how staying still isn’t really an option anymore...
So this month, if you haven’t already, take one small step towards improving your cyber safety. Try the NCSC Toolkit, review your password policy, or run a quick update check. It all counts.
Protecting your data means protecting your relationships and your reputation. And you can't make proper progress without protection.
🤝 Let’s Keep Connected Writing this week’s blog reminded me that cyber resilience is cultural as well as technical. It has to be built through awareness, accountability and a shared sense of responsibility.
How about you?
Has your business taken any steps to improve its cyber security this year?
I’d love to hear what’s worked for you. And if you’re planning to start your own Cyber Essentials journey, I’d be more than happy to share some tips from my experience. Until next time...
